Tell me a little about yourself and your family.
My name is Carrie and I am a mom, a wife, and an acupuncturist. My wife and I have 3 amazing littles; a 3.5 year old boy and 18 month old boy/girl twins. Our world is a little crazy but we love it and wouldn’t change a thing!
Tell me about your business.
I am an acupuncturist and work about 3.5 days a week. I’m incredibly lucky, as I am my own boss and get to be really flexible so I have time for my family. I started my practice in 2010 and while it was a struggle at first it’s doing pretty well now. I’ve recently added essential oils and it’s been a really fun addition.
How do you structure your day? week?
My days are all different. I am off on Monday’s and I’m usually getting ready for the week, laundry, meal prep, the boring mom chores. Tuesday’s I work in the afternoon into the evening, so I have the morning with all the kids but don’t get home until bedtime. So it’s in the door and bedtime duties before I can relax. Wednesday my wife has off so she is home with the kids while I work and Thursday’s are another afternoon to evening for me. And fridays I work a few hours in the morning while our oldest in preschool. We are so lucky to have family help us on the days we both work. My father in law has the kids Tuesday’s and my mom has then Thursday and Friday (she spends the night with us)
What is your best tip for balancing business and family?
Before kids I would go to the office to see patients whenever they were available, now I have clear boundaries about when I work and when I don’t. This allows me to consolidate my time at the office and be home more. I know they won’t be small forever and I don’t want to miss it all.
How do you market your business?
Just word of mouth really. I looked into advertising a little but it seems everyone knows someone who has an acupuncturist and they are more likely to go to someone who is referred to them.
What advice would you give another mother who wanted to start a business?
Go for it! Take the leap and believe in yourself. Loving my job makes me a better mom and a better wife.
What business tool could you not live without? Why?
My iPad. I keep all my patient files on it, as well as documents, old class notes, and I have some really useful apps. And of course endless pictures of my kids to show people:)
Where do you envision your business in five years?
I hope that it continues to grow as it has. I imagine as the kids get older I’ll change my hours a bit and maybe have more time to expand. My sister and I are also stating an essential oil business so I’m hoping that takes off and gives us even more flexibility as a family.
How do you practice self care?
I’m really not very good at this right now. I am trying to be better in the new year!
Being a mom is incredibly challenging and rewarding. I have days where I feel like I won’t make it, but having a job I love and a family that supports each other is what helps the most.
